Biography

Jenny Toth works in Manhattan, sometimes in her apartment, sometimes in her studio, and sometimes you can see her drawing at the zoo. She is an Associate Professor of Art at Wagner College, where she has been teaching painting, drawing, and other creative adventures since 1999. Jenny has also taught at Smith College and SUNY Potsdam. As a member of Blue Mountain Gallery in NYC , she shows there regularly along with other venues. Jenny received her B.A. from Smith College in 1994 and her M.F.A. from Yale School of Art in 1998. She attended Yale from 1994-1995 and then took a two-year hiatus and attended The New York Studio School from 1995-1997 returning to Yale in 1997-1998. She was lucky to have studied with many great professors along the way including Stanley Lewis, Graham Nickson, Mercedes Matter, and William Bailey, just to name a few. She has traveled alone to such far-flung places as Greenland and West Papua, and regularly spends time in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and La Jolla, CA. She lives with her two sons, husband, and her elderly rescue dogs Muppet and Mr. Scruffles. She strives to find adventure regularly.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work revolves around certain themes, but always is based on direct observation of the material world. I think about the relationships between people and animals and strive for a mix of communicating honest emotions and an authentic record of my perceptual experience.

My recent relief-paintings and sculptures explore themes of animal isolation and connection, captivity, and hope.  I try to use humor and empathy as I combine imagery directly observed from nature into new compositions.  Earlier I found ways of working directly from perception while using papier-mâché sculptures or my children’s drawings to make new worlds to paint from.  This work led to the relief paintings which have become a hybrid of sculpture and painting. I use mirrors and windows in my paintings and reliefs to compress space and overtly put myself into an environment to reinforce the kind of self-reflection and connections I feel.
